In today’s world we are facing several social changes in America. Abortion or women’s right to choose is among the changes that are now in debate not only among citizens but in government. Part of the debate is deciding when a person actually starts living and the other is whether to legalize abortion or not.
Abortion can be traced back all the way to the Roman Empire. Romans did not concern themselves with the safety of the unborn child unless the father of the child objected. To Romans life did not begin until after 40 days of conception. Modern scientist have stated and proven that human life begins when the sperm joins the ovum. Now that scientist have proven that life begins at conception this now turns to whether abortion should be legalized.
I understand that horrible things happen to women and that not all pregnancy are not their fault. In the case of a women being raped I believe that the person who raped the victim should be punished not the child of both the victim and the perpetrator. I believe that when a women is in the situation of having to raise a child that they had not planned on raising that the family of the mother should help take care of them until the mother is able to support herself and the child. If the mothers family can not provide assistance then it is the duty of the church to help the mother and the child until they able to support themselves.
The fact that women are being raped and that the family is not able to assist in both protecting the victim and helping them is a very sad state of affairs. Institutions have however have opened to help the victims recover from this traumatic experience and help them financially until they are able to support themselves. I do not think that abortion should be legalize due to the financial aid and the help that is available for women who find themselves in this situation.
Abortion is a touchy subject. What I get from this blog is that you believe the government (of all people) should have the privilege of taking away the option of mother's decision of aborting a baby or keeping when not one person besides maybe the father, (if he decides to stick around) knows what's best for the baby like a mother does?
ReplyDeleteWould you save a human, that hasn't taken a breath into this world yet, who hasn't stepped foot on the ground yet or has even talked a single word over a mother that has lived. Think about it like this, if a baby was going to cause maternal death, would you save the mom, the one who has lived on and can make more children because of her high fertility, or would you take a chance on the baby, who will then be forced to live without a mom therefore making her not as psychologically stable, forever taking on the blame that she was the reason she didn't have a mom growing up and at the same time taking the time and chances of her even being fertile enough to conceive a child of her own?
The Roman Empire is as old as dirt, and so are their theories. 40 days being when life begins was probably some old rich emperor who closed his eyes and picked a number. Life ends and death begins when you take your LAST breath so why wouldn't life begin when you take your FIRST breath?
Horrible things happen all the time, but why should the rape victim suffer for something that was out of her hands or something she couldn't control. Does it make sense to make a mother live with a constant reminder that for probably five minutes she let her guard down and couldn't protect herself. Does it make sense that the mom has to explain to their future child that their father was a horrible man who raped her mother and is either living in conviction or got away and wants nothing to do with the child or the mother? (I didn't want you, I was forced by a stranger to have sex with him while he held a knife to my throat and then it was illegal to kill you before you were born, so here we are).
If we take the church providing financial assistance into consideration, how much could the church really provide? Most churches, (mine does at least) have a lot of members, and are non-profit organizations, who are the most selfless organizations you can find but of course, how to you suppose the church can afford to keep the lights, electricity and keep the water heater running to promote comfort ability. With that said, if a church believes in conception outside of marriage, can a church really provide for more than one person based of the tithes and offerings given by people? More than likely we'll ask what's in it for us. So what happens if not everyone in the church supports you, because let's face it: We're Humans; we’re Americans; we’re Selfish, especially when it comes to money.
It doesn't exactly make sense to me why the mother or the mother's family has to provide any type of financial assistance because again it's none of their faults. KIDS COST A LOT OF MONEY, and for some reason, I don't exactly agree with making a mother who is having a baby against her will, out of wedlock, out of money, take on a baby that is not hers and she was forced to create, while on the other hand the male gets two options, both absurd. One way is the case where he gets free housing, free gym membership and free three meals a day (prison), and the other where he would get away with it and doesn't help pay for the child and has no further contact with the child.
Abortion is a very touchy subject, and some try to avoid it but how can a problem be resolved if no one is willing to talk. Or if when they talk they are biased and defensive instead of open minded. Yes abortion has been around for hundred of years but does that make it right? With todays technology scientists have found out that life begins at conception. Not only that but brain activity begins at 6 weeks, and at 8 weeks the baby can feel pain. With all this technology some states have made laws that make it illegal for abortions after the baby is 20 weeks old.
ReplyDeleteNow everyone makes this argument about rape. But in reality the number of abortions that happen from rape is less than .5% of all abortions. But the main reason for abortion is the child would be an inconvenience or too much for the mother. So basically it would be easier to just end the baby's life than to keep it. There are many organizations that are made just for these circumstances. They will help the mother with necessities that she and the baby needs.
Now take religion out of the picture, I'm sure everyone would agree that it is morally wrong to kill a helpless baby. So what's the difference of killing a baby after its born and before its born? They are both alive, but you just can't physically see the unborn one. So does that make it any less of a human?

Jessie, I have to disagree with you on this topic. I do not like the idea of killing a baby however for some reason that might be the best option in a person's opinion. In some cases you can not help being impregnated, like rape as you stated, however even if they had help from others help isn't always enough. I wouldn't promote that anyone have an abortion ever, however, when I put myself in the situation of others I understand why that's an option they consider. When I think about my own situation and how much a baby would affect that I then too understand why that is an option to consider. It's harsh because you are taking a life but in my opinion I feel that the person who is making that decision and the people in her life are really the only people that it affects.
