Marriage Equality
Sometimes I wonder why we vote on people's rights, especially when it comes to marriage. The way I see it, why do we vote for human rights? If they're rights, then shouldn't they be guaranteed to all humans? I guess some people don't think that way. I feel like equality is a form of justice. And another thing: when people argue against marriage equality, they usually use some form of biased information or religious excuse. There is a reason for separation of church and state. Even the current President of the United States wants to pass a marriage equality law. If he's gotten gas back down to under $2, don't you think he might be on the right track? Homosexuality occurs naturally and is considered by many to be a normal type of sexual orientation. Gay people are more or less visible in society depending on its attitude toward homosexuality. A gay person in a very homophobic country with anti-gay laws and fervent religious persecution will most likely hide who they are out of fear. This creates the illusion that homosexuality occurs less - or doesn’t exist at all - in deeply religious parts of the world(including the US). What comes to mind when you consider what’s wrong with the world? War, poverty, environmental decay, animal cruelty, child abuse, bigotry and hatred, racism and homophobia? I doubt you put love and sex at the top of your list.LGBTQ+ teens are four times more likely to commit suicide than the average cisgendered straight teenager. These things are wonderful and natural. Homosexuality has even been proven to show in several animals. Homophobia is only found in humans. Same-sex marriage is legal in 36 states. I'm not saying the majority is always right, but in some cases, the majority is doing what's good for the rest of the group.

Heaven, I agree with you and think that a right is a right, and why should we vote on rights ? Rights should be there without a vote, they are given to us by virtue of being human. And I think you did define an injustice in our society. Why should only a man and woman couple be given the right of marriage when couples are not only men and women ? This has been a long overlooked and a subject of much pain in the lives of many. The justice systems moves slowly, the issue of gay marriage has actually moved through the justice system quickly. I think people know that the judgement and criticism associated with people's sexual preference is inherently wrong and I hope that this is one injustice that will be corrected soon by the Supreme Court allowing gay marriage in all 50 states.
ReplyDeleteHeaven and Denise, I agree with you both. Marriage rights are given to us at birth giving us the decision of who we would marry rather than our marriages being up to our parents or leaders (arranged marriages) . Not that I agree with bans on laws against a persons decision based on what they feel in their heart but sometimes we have to face the fact that just like (it's a right-handed world) we live in a predominantly straight world. Since birth its been man and woman, girls and boys giving no space or leeway to those who felt otherwise. With religion, early on schooling, television and other forms of media, homosexuality had been such an untouched subject until we're teens and afraid to say what we really feel because people are afraid to get chastised for saying what they've been burning to say their whole lives maybe. And the negativity geared towards homosexuality is so heavily concentrated it makes people ashamed to reveal who they feel bencher if the predetermined stereotypes linked with homosexuality. There is no justice in telling people who they can and can't legally be bound to for the rest of their lives. I don't believe the government should have the right to take away a basic right as that.

DeleteHeaven, I also agree. Even though I was raised in a household where homosexuality is looked down upon I have always understood the "gays" and how equality should be granted. Homosexuality is a choice and if that is a choice that someone wants to make I don't see a problem with that or how it could be anybody else's business. However, I wasn't aware that homosexuality had been shown in animals.
