Angela's dilemma
After watching the Catfish documentary, I can see that some of Angela's story was a situation that snowballed out of her control. I do think she set out to deceive and lie, but in many ways, she backed herself into a corner and things just kept getting worse and worse for her. I don't believe she thought she would get caught ! This reminds me in some way of Gages ring. So, Angela believed she did not have to be just or tell the truth because she didn't think she would get caught. She did though, and was forced to admit what she did wrong. Even though she may have behaved the way she did for many different reasons, she did know that what she did was wrong. I believe she would have never admitted what she did if she had not been caught. This is true for many of us, we would never admit to things we did wrong if we were not caught and forced to admit what we did.

This story also reminded me of Gyge's ring. Angela believed she was invisible, hidden behind a computer screen and the fact that Nev lived several states away. She never suspected that he would come to find out the truth! At first I felt sympathy for her and her situation. Her life couldn't have been easy, and not many would have agreed to take care of two grown, handicapped boys who were not their own. She was unhappy with her life, and the only way she knew to change it was to create a fake life for herself through several different Facebook profiles. However, when she continued to lie, even after Nev asked for the truth, my sympathy toward her began to diminish. He gave her the opportunity to come clean and tell him what was going on, but she continued to try to keep the lie going for as long as she could.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well Denise, Angela did do things and I really do believe that she created a world of her own not knowing that it would go this far. On the other hand something good has came out of this and she did come clean I just hope that she continue in good will☺
ReplyDeleteAngela still didn't come clean, even after she was caught. She still told lies on top of the lies that Niv had already known to be untrue. Angela may not have believed she would get caught, but even after she got caught she still made up more lies. Most people would throw in the towel and just come clean if we were caught. But she didn't. She fought until the end to try and make some part of her lies real.
ReplyDeleteSee, I think I disagree. I think that she set out to deceive as soon as she got in touch with Nev because she realized she could be whoever she wanted since Nev didn't know her and they were so far apart by distance. I would not be surprised at all if she had tried this with other people before Nev.
ReplyDeleteI see it a little differently. Though it does relate to Gyges' ring, I believe Angela even said that she knew she would be found out one day, and while I also believe that she knew what she was doing wasn't exactly wrong, I think she really did not see the harm in it either. She was trying to make herself happy which in itself isn't a bad thing. I do believe that at some point she would have felt so guilty that she would tell the truth. After all, I don't know many couples who choose to never meet. This was eventually going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I do feel that Angela thought she was invisible and that the likelihood of her being discovered was slim. However, when she does get discovered she still does not come clean with the whole truth even when asked to come clean. Therefore the sympathy I felt for in the beginning began to disappear because it appears that she did not care herself.
