Lets just not.

This situation is literally just like the Batman movie where the joker had two boats and told them the button on the wall blew up the other ship. We should have faith in each other because if they all know that if they wait both side would live, they should have the moral to chose life of everyone rather than the few. According to Mill, the best decision would be one that causes the greatest amount of happiness and the greatest amount of happiness would be everyone living from both buildings. And that is also what happened in Batman, neither ship pushed the button and both the citizens and the inmates lived. Kant would also say that killing others is wrong and so neither Kant nor Mill would push the button. The only reason the people would push the button is out of fear that the other people would push the button. Which, to restate my first point, just means that everyone just needs to keep their faith in peoples humanity.

  1. I agree with you that people should trust the people in the other building. People never know other's situation. For example, what if there is a guy who is expecting a baby soon or any other situation. Today's society should be able to trust others that they would choose for everybody to live rather than fearing that somebody is going to push the button.

  2. I want to have faith in humanity but one person can ruin it all. If there was one person on either side that just wanted to live a bit more than everyone else, their would of pressed the button. Because the button guarantee that they will be making it out alive! I'm not saying I would push the button, because I want to see the good in everyone, but there would have to be a lot of me's, people who wouldn't want to push the button, to calm down the person who wants to have that 100% chance of getting out alive.

  3. It would definitely be the smartest decision to not push the button and cause everyone to live. With that being said, that doesn't mean that ONE person could mess it all up out of mistrust, fear and other leading factors. I feel like there will always be that one person who is a bit selfish.

  4. I do believe that we, as a society, should have faith in others more. There have been many situations where someone does bad things to someone else because they believe that person wants to hurt someone. If we trusted each other, we may have a more peaceful world. However, I also agree with other commentators that we do live in a world with bad, people who will do bad, irrational things, and we should take those into account as well.
