I am sure that most of you have seen the video of the Officer at Spring Valley High School throw the student out of the desk, and across the room. And if you haven't I strongly suggest that you all do so.

So many people have different opinions on what happened at Spring Valley High School that day. Some people are appalled that an officer of the law would do anything like that. While others feel like there is more to the story. I myself feel like their is no reason on why an officer would have to remove a student with that much force. However, I have done some research into this story, and have read countless theory's that claim to be the "real truth" on what happened that day. All of the stories claim to have eye witnesses, and first person accounts from students and teachers, but they all have different stories. From what I have read, the most occurring story seems to be that the student was being disruptive on her phone and refused to get off of it. After that, the teacher asked her to leave the classroom more than once, and called the school security to remove her from the class. Now this is where the stories become completely different. Nothing that I have read seems to be the same about the events of that day.
However, from what I could see from the video, no one seemed to be against what was happening to the student. Which goes back to a theory that we went over in class, about us being so used to social injustice that we have become compliant to it. It's something that everyone wants to think that they aren't compliant, that they are the one's that would stand up against the injustice. However their are many social experiment tests that show how compliant we have become. One of witch I want you as a reader to watch, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSsPfbup0ac
Thank you all for reading this, and cannot wait to see what you think.
I completely agree with you. It doesn't matter what the student did, the officer had no right to put his hands on her and especially not in an aggressive, violent way the way that he did. That is someone's child and a human being. The students have been so programmed to obey authority that no one stood up and silence filled the room. Society has definitely programmed us to be compliant, whether it's to officers, teachers, and more. The video showed how our compliance has become so great that we will let injustice happen in the world.
ReplyDeleteInteresting video you posted Alex. It is weird how when there's more people around, no one steps up to help the individual; they're afraid of "taking responsibility" for their action or rather wait for someone else to be responsible. On the other hand, there could be other factors involved such as not knowing what to do or being afraid of consequences; in which these two factors would apply to the Spring Valley situation. Although the students wanted (I assume) to help, they could not. They were (as we all were) raised to conform to authority. Now, I do believe that if it was the teacher (for example) who did that, the students would intervene in some way. However, because it law enforcement, the consequences for intervening is much greater.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you in today's society everyone has seem to become compliant. I feel as if whatever the student did, it didn't give that officer the right to aggressively remove her the way he did; especially if she was not a threat to anyone. The students were probably experiencing the "bystander effect" which is when individuals do not offer any type of help to the victim when others are present, because they expect someone else to say or do something. We all have been brought up to respect our elders, law enforcement, etc. So that's why we are compliant we have been programmed not to say or do anything in a way that can offend anyone with authority.
