What is Justice?

Many people have had different opinions on the definition of Justice. Many thought, centuries ago, that the powerful and wealthy are the ones to dictate and decide what Justice and who shall be the ones is receiving it.  Thrasymachus believed that Justice is the advantage of the strongest.  In this case who’s with more money or more power are the ones deemed just and should be the ones to determine justice for others.  In today’s generation we have a slightly different opinion on the definition of justice.  Justice today is viewed as the quality of being fair and decent.  Personally, I feel Justice is more of being fair and decent rather than the representation of who’s on top.  Thrasymachus does make a rather accurate description for his era and ours as well.  For example, today the group that makes up our justice system are the ones that are wealthier and have more political power than others in the country.  Therefore, they get to make the decisions about what is right and wrong.  This group does get to decide if something is fair and decent or not but it’s the specific group that has the power to choose.  If we could follow Plato’s idea about justice, than we could all have more order and harmony amongst one another.  Polemarchus believed that justice is doing good to one’s friends and doing harm to one’s enemies. I think the idea of doing good to one’s friend’s  is always right and can be considered a little part of justice but the second part about doing harm to one’s enemies is not.  There have been many people throughout history that believed an eye for an eye or getting even was a big part of justice, but really it just creates more harm and conflict to everyone.  Getting even or getting revenge is pretty much the opposite of what Plato believed was deemed as justice.  His ideas brought order and harmony while Polemarchus’s idea caused harm and chaos.  Though Thrasymachus and Polemarchus thoughts on justice were not quite accurate, they both still have a good point that could be considered part of what is believed to be justice.

  1. I also agree with the premise that an eye for an eye just creates more harm and that it can lead to further conflict. I also agree that justice is really subjective and people have different ideas on what they deem as justice.
