Society has been asked the question
“Would you prefer a life without pain, one of tranquility and peace?” again and
again. The answer to that question though has always been a confusing response.
Most people would say no. A person would argue that in tranquility you would
find boredom. But to that extent if you live a life of no pain or suffering
would not boredom be erased as well? Is a life without suffering so hard for
the human mind to grasp that a person must deny it at all avenues because if
they did grasp it then what? Would that thought in and of itself cause
suffering? This world that is lived in is not perfect by any means and the
people who live on it are nowhere near perfection. When in class the discussion of
this life without suffering came up and everyone seemed to argue against it.
Lucretius talks about the perfect way to live in happiness is to have that life
without suffering. Society’s problem with that way of thinking is that as a
whole a person is addicted to the highs and lows of life. The ones that come with
the concept of suffering. To a single person to live without suffering is
impossible. To them you cannot learn without suffering, and you cannot
experience joy without suffering. A look at the life without suffering does not
seem to be so grand if you compare it to the highs of life with suffering in
it.
I remember that Dr. J said that a life without suffering isn't necessarily a life without variety. It is hard for the human mind to imagine a world without suffering and we have lived in it so long that we are almost comfortable with it. if the world were faced with true peace, there would be a select number of individuals that would try to disturb it due to their want for anarchy and drama. IN my opinion this is due to an unhealthy understanding of what a good life is. I imagine a life without suffering like an amusement park that has new rides everyday and you never have to be in line. (the simplest thing i could come up with). would i really be upset that I don't have to wait in line? Would I complain that i got my funnel cake too fast? for those that agree with highs and lows being good cannot at the same time agree with the concept of heaven. (freedom from suffering) for those that believe in Heaven or a type of paradise or state of freedom from pain after we die, they would be inconsistent with what they say they want for their soul. i believe once people stop associating variety with suffering, the choice will be much clearer.
